Solid Advice On How To Start Writing A Research Paper

Many students make the mistake of trying to sit down and start on their research paper right away. They may waste minutes or even hours staring at a blank page, at a loss for where to begin. By following these three solid steps, however, you can get a great start to writing your research paper.

Step #1: Brainstorm

The brainstorming step is essential to choosing exactly what you want to write about. In this step, you should strive to brainstorm topics that are interesting to you. After all, if you have to spend a week or longer researching and writing a dull topic, you will be more likely to procrastinate. Brainstorm several topics and then narrow it down to 3-5 options. You will need these options for the next step, where you will make sure that the topic you choose is one that you can work with.

Step #2: Choose Your Topic and Conduct Research

There are a few different parts to choosing your topic. If you have your three (or more) ideas from brainstorming, you can conduct preliminary research for each topic. This ensures that the topic you have chosen has enough supporting evidence. If necessary, you may need to narrow or broaden your topic further. Once you have an appropriate topic, you are ready to begin research. Use the information you have already found and find any additional information that you may need to support the thesis of your paper.

Step #3: Write an Outline

Writing an outline before starting your paper is essential to organizing your ideas. You can choose which information goes into which paragraph and then once you actually sit down to write the paper, it will be a breeze. If you find that organizing your ideas on paper is difficult, consider writing each fact on a note card. Once all of your facts are written down on note cards, you can easily move them around and organize your ideas into the categories of supporting ideas, facts, etc. Then, you will be ready to begin your paper.

By following these three simple steps, you can make your writing process easier. While many students make the mistake of thinking that these steps take additional time, it is a lot faster than staring at a blank piece of paper for hours. Additionally, helps to ensure that your research paper is organized, clear, and well-written.
